Summer Reading Kickoff Party

Celebrate summer by joining us for a Summer Reading Kickoff Party on Saturday, June 22 featuring Dragon Theater’s Super Silly Circus Show.  The party is at Shute Park from 11 am to 2 pm, with the puppet show from 12:30 – 1:20 pm. It’s free and all are welcome!

Summer Reading is Beneficial

Set your student up for success. Research shows that students lose reading skills over the summer, so here are some easy ways to keep your student moving forward. 

6 tips to prevent summer slide:

1. Visit the Hillsboro Public Library and sign up for the Summer Reading Program between June 1 and August 31.
   
   
2. Let children and teens select their reading materials and read for fun. Children who choose what they read are likely to be more successful. 
   
   
3. Encourage children and teens to read, but don't make it a chore. Keep it fun.
   
   
4. Parents, caregivers, and other adults can help stem Summer Slide by reading themselves. Children who see adults reading tend to read more by choice.
   
   
5. Reading just four to six books over the summer has the potential to prevent a decline in reading scores, so even small steps are beneficial.
   
   
6. Attend one of the free, fun programs at the Hillsboro Public Library — or visit us at our Library on the Loose during an upcoming event.

"Access to books is vital to maintain reading skills through the summer," says Linda Osuna, Library Manager. "The public library is an excellent free resource for families to access books with a wide range of interests and reading levels. 

"In 2022, we also launched the Student Library Card in partnership with the Hillsboro School District and Washington County Cooperative Library Services. Now, every student has an account to borrow print, e-books, audiobooks, and more."
