Following consecutive years at the top of the green power rankings, Hillsboro remains the national leader for overall green power usage and climbed to the 3^rd place community for green power as a percentage of total electricity use, based on data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

• Hillsboro community members and the City voluntarily purchase more than three billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power each year.
  
  
• These purchases represent 65.8 percent of all power purchased throughout the Hillsboro community.
  
  
• Since 2012, Hillsboro has steadily increased the percentage of green power used by homes and businesses from 39 percent to 65.8 percent in 2024.

What is green power?

Green power is zero-emissions electricity that is generated from environmentally preferable renewable resources, such as wind, solar, geothermal, biogas, eligible biomass, and low-impact hydro. Using green power helps build demand for the development of new renewable energy capacity nationwide and helps users reduce their carbon footprints.
