Sign up for PublicAlerts to receive information by text, phone, or email when dangerous weather or other emergencies are happening in the counties where you live, work, and play.

Safety Concerns

If someone outside is unsheltered and their life appears to be in danger, call 911.

If you are concerned about someone during cold weather, call Washington County Non-Emergency at 503-629-0111 to request a welfare check.

Weather Closures & Delays

All City of Hillsboro facilities are open on regular schedules.

When closures do occur, essential and remote services continue and the latest updates on all facility schedules will be posted here. During severe weather, check this website for updates before you head out.

Washington County's severe weather shelters are closed.

During dangerously cold weather, Washington County's severe weather shelters open 24 hours a day until conditions improve to ensure no one seeking shelter is turned away.

Call Public Works Dispatch from 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday at 503-615-6509.
After-hours, call Washington County Non-Emergency Dispatch at 503-629-0111.
To report issues with a traffic signal or roadway blockages due to trees or branches, call Washington County Non-Emergency Dispatch at 503-629-0111.

Prepare Your Home and Family

Water Emergencies

Report water emergencies to the Water Department at 503-615-6702 during business hours, or enter your phone number — including your area code — on the after-hours emergency pager at 503-615-6775 for a call back.

If you are experiencing a frozen or broken water pipe and unable to thaw the pipe or locate your water main shut off valve, contact Hillsboro Water immediately for an emergency water shut off.

DO NOT CALL 911 to request these services.

Travel Safety Information

Winter Travel on TriMet

Visit TriMet's Winter Weather webpage for the latest updates on detours, delays, and cancellations, as well as a full list of winter travel tips, routes subject to cancellation, and information on service during severe snow and ice.

Dress warmly and expect delays.

Road conditions affect all traffic, so buses may experience significant delays.
Chained buses can't travel more than 25 miles per hour.
MAX Light Rail WES Commuter Rail, and Portland Streetcar will operate normally unless there is a problem with the tracks, switches, or overhead wires.
Always dress warmly, plan extra time, and make sure you're visible when it's dark out.

Bus Riders

Be prepared for detours and cancellations.
Buses will follow their normal routes as long as the streets are safe for travel.
If the weather gets really bad, and stays bad, TriMet will limit service to a select group of bus lines operating on plowed streets.
When boarding a bus in snow and ice:
- If your bus stop is in the middle of a hill, walk to the bottom or top of the hill where the operator can safely stop.
- Stand back from the curb until the bus comes to a complete stop. Buses can slide sideways in slippery conditions.
- When roads are snowy or icy, buses will not pull all the way over to the curb to avoid getting stuck. Be careful when walking between the bus and the curb. Accommodations will be made to assist riders with mobility devices.

MAX Riders

Plan extra time. Your train may be delayed and you may have to make extra transfers.
MAX typically runs well in snow, though it's not uncommon for trains to be delayed because cares are stuck blocking racks.
Ice and freezing rain can cause problems with the overhead wires.

Winter Travel Tips for Drivers

Slow down. Drive, brake, and turn slowly. Slow down, increase your distance from the vehicle in front of you, and give yourself longer stopping distances.
Plan ahead. Check road conditions and plan your route.
Carry chains and an emergency kit. Fit chains to tires prior to a storm and carry them in your trunk.
Be aware. Look out for all road users, including bicyclists and pedestrians.
Turn your lights on to increase your visibility to other road users.
Do not pass snow plows or road treatment equipment.

Biking in Winter Conditions

Slow down. Ride, break, and turn slowly. Hold handlebars firmly and give yourself longer stopping distances.
Use wider tires to increase your grip, control and stability.
Turn on front and rear lights to increase your visibility.
Wear bright or reflective clothing and gear to help others see you.
Avoid painted and steel road surfaces, as they may be slick.
Do not pass snow plows or road treatment equipment.
