Addressing and premise identification are an integral part of an emergency response system, allowing responders to efficiently respond to all types of emergencies without delay. The following information details how properties and buildings are addressed and provides instructions for the installation of address and premise identification.

Definitions
Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU): An additional dwelling unit located on the same lot as, and is used in connection with, or that is accessory to, a detached single family dwelling or single family attached dwelling. Also called a secondary or ancillary dwelling unit.
Complex: Three or more buildings on a single parcel.
Complex Map: A visual representation of a complex in plan view denoting the location of buildings, building designations, access roadways, and other features required by the fire code official.
Flag Lot: A lot so shaped that the buildable area (the “flag”) is not adjacent to the street or alley on which the lot fronts, and which includes a private access strip (the “pole”) connecting the buildable area to the street or alley.
Garden-Style Apartments: An apartment complex with a cluster of low-rise buildings, usually no more than three stories high with open stairwells, surrounded by landscaping, surface parking lots, and internal private access roads.
Monument Sign: Permanently installed sign visible to the public that provides addressing and premise identification as required by the fire code official.
