The Hillsboro Public Library welcomes groups, organizations, or individuals to use the Gallery area and display cases at our libraries for art and exhibit space. The aims of the Hillsboro Public Library gallery spaces are:
- To create a space where artists and patrons are welcome to connect.
- To provide career development opportunities for artists by providing gallery space to show their work.
- To create community and discussion around diverse art and culture, especially by engaging with those who normally would not go to a traditional gallery.
- To offer an inclusive, all-ages art experience for patrons of the Hillsboro Library.
The exhibit space offers artists an opportunity for free expression of ideas through various media and the chance to shape the content and spaces experienced by community members. Space is provided for educational, cultural, civic, or recreational exhibits, particularly of local interest. All exhibits are free and open to the public.
The space is curated and managed by Library and/or City of Hillsboro staff and is not available for strictly commercial purposes.
A group or individual that is not associated with the Library must apply in advance to use the library display space. Selection is carried out by staff and will be based on:
- Artistic Considerations: Composition and design, visual impact, technical craftsmanship, originality, and cultural significance.
- Logistical Considerations: Eligibility of artist and proposal according to guidelines, including artwork readiness for display, commitment to deadlines, quality of proposal/application materials, etc. In addition, priority may be given to local and new artists.
- Overall Gallery Season Considerations: Diversity of themes and representation across all exhibits, facility logistics and other practical and logistical considerations specific to our building and its functions. The Library’s programmatic need for exhibit space takes precedence over the public’s request to use such areas.
Staff will consider a wide range of artistic expression; however, the Library is mindful that all segments of the community and all age groups use the display areas. When staff is not certain about a proposed exhibit, concerns should be referred to library management. Final responsibility for selection of exhibits rests with the Library Director.
Use of space for exhibits/displays does not constitute an endorsement of the artist’s beliefs by the Library. Use of library exhibit space may be denied or cancelled if any library regulation or applicable law is violated.
