NOTE: Recruitment periods are opened quarterly based on needs. When the recruitment is OPEN you will be able to schedule an in-person interview.

Start the process now:

1. Application
   • Fill out general volunteer application
2. Schedule an in-person interview
   • You’ll be contacted to schedule an in-person interview when recruitment periods are open.  
3. Background Check
   • A background check is required for all regularly scheduled library volunteers
   • The Volunteer Engagement Office will initiate the background check after the interview is complete
4. Orientation
   • Orientations are held 4-6 weeks after recruitment opens each quarter
   • Some positions will require additional training to be arranged as per assignment
   • Schedule Orientation with Volunteer Engagement

We encourage our Corporate or other large groups to assist with the set up of our Friends of the Library Book Sales happening prior to the Washington County Fair in mid July,  or in mid October and in mid April at the Brookwood Library.  From time to time, there may be the possibility to do other group activities depending on library needs.  Groups of up to 20 people can be engaged by prior arrangement with at least six weeks advance notice.  School or community groups including children under the age of 14, are by special arrangement, please contact the Volunteer Engagement office for details. 

Opportunities vary but may include:

• Book Sale set-up or tear-down – minimum age 15, set dates and shifts 
• Book cleaning –  suitable ages 10 and above
• Event prep –  suitable ages 14 and above
• Friends of the Library donation evaluation –  suitable ages 16 and above with computer skills

Preferred Times:

• Monday - Friday
• 10 am - 1 pm
• 2 - 5 pm
• Weekends and evenings by prior arrangement

Are there any opportunities for my work/school/church group to volunteer at the Library?

In general, we accepts groups of up to 15 people, age 15 and over to help with book sale setups, mid-October, mid-April, and sometimes mid-July. Please email Volunteer Engagement with details about your group needs, the age of the participants, and the time frame.  

Do I have to have a set schedule?

Most assignments require a once weekly three to six month commitment on a consistent schedule. Some bi-monthly or monthly assignments may be possible.

How old do I have to be to volunteer?

We engage volunteers who are age 14 and older. Most opportunities for teens are during the summer.

What if I only want to volunteer for a few weeks?

Most of our short-term volunteer opportunities happen during the Friends of the Library book sales. If you are looking for a current short-term opportunity other organizations may be better able to work with your schedule.
