About El Grito

Centro Cultural's El Grito in Shute Park is sponsored by the City of Hillsboro. Join us this year for the El Grito Community Festival, September 14, 2023, from 2 pm to 7 pm. Bring the whole family to enjoy beautifully restored and customized vehicles, along with cultural activities, mariachi performances, ballet folklórico, singing, and an exhibition of local Latino art. 

The El Grito holiday on September 16 celebrates Mexican Independence Day, as well as the independence of six other Latin American countries:

• Chile
• Costa Rica
• El Salvador
• Guatemala
• Honduras
• Nicaragua

Mexican Independence Day honors the day Father Miguel Hidalgo, one of the nation’s leaders during the War of Independence in Mexico, made El Grito de la Independencia — the Cry of Independence. It is also known as El Grito de Dolores since it happened in the town of Dolores in th.e Mexican state of Guanajuato.
