It is important to make sure that the entire family is prepared and informed in the event of a disaster or emergency. You may not always be together when these events take place and should have plans for making sure you are able to contact and find one another.
Making a family preparedness plan is simple! Here are a few steps to guide you through:
  • Download the Family Communication Plan for Kids or the Family Communication Plan for Parents and fill out the sections. This will ensure that all family members have correct contact information, even if they are unable to use their mobile phone.
  • Pull together everyone in your household and make a plan. Walk through your home and inspect all possible exits and escape routes. Households with children should consider drawing a floor plan of your home, marking two ways out of each room, including windows and doors. Also, mark the location of each smoke alarm. For easy planning, download NFPA's escape planning grid. This is a great way to get children involved in fire safety in a non-threatening way.
  • Select a room and make a plan to shelter-in-place. Make sure that the supplies needed to take shelter are included in your emergency kit.
  • Your emergency planning should also address the care of pets, aiding family members with access and functional needs and safely shutting off utilities.
  • Once you create your family preparedness plan, review it and practice it often. Ensure that all members of your household know what to do when it matters most.
