Local Artists Complete Two New Murals
Two murals that celebrate Latino culture and aim to help enhance livability in Hillsboro’s Calle Diez (10th Avenue) area were completed in November 2022.
Local artists William Hernandez and Abdiel Flores Ubaldo were recently commissioned to complete the murals in the historically Latino business district. The artists based their designs on community feedback received as part of the 10th Avenue Visioning project.
The murals by Hernandez on the wall of Supermercado Mexico (970 SE Oak Street) and by Ubaldo on the wall of the business center at 460 10th Avenue are visible from 10th Avenue in a busy shopping area of Calle Diez, which is part of Hillsboro’s Cultural Arts District.
These projects were made possible through a collaborative partnership between the City of Hillsboro’s Public Art Program, Hillsboro’s Cultural Arts District, the Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC), and local property and business owners.
The murals in Calle Diez are the first of three projects planned for the Cultural Arts District, with more murals coming in 2023.
Public art, such as murals, can help create memorable shared spaces, support local business, promote economic development, and inspire a sense of community.
