Better Jobs, Better Wages: Developing Career Pathways in Advanced Manufacturing
As a state leader in reimagining and redesigning career pathways, the City of Hillsboro is working with partners to create opportunities for all stages of careers. Whether our communities members are re-entering or new to the workforce, transitioning careers, or upskilling in their existing field.
Careers in the advanced manufacturing industry are a way to create good, family wage jobs that strengthen our communities and bring our economy into the 21st century. Especially in Hillsboro, where one out of every four jobs is in manufacturing.
Together the City of Hillsboro and its partners are working to expand and diversify employment opportunities while meeting the authentic needs of our diverse community and diverse industries.
Last year, Hillsboro celebrated four important milestones:
1. The launch of Hillsboro Advanced Manufacturing Apprenticeship program which provides hands-on paid training to high schoolers preparing them for a career in advanced manufacturing.
2. The five-year anniversary of Prosperidad de Centro Economic Empowerment Center which is focused on improving economic vitality, removing barriers to prosperity, and building an equitable economy for all.
3. The ten-year anniversary of PCC Future Connect Scholarship program which has helped more than 500 Hillsboro students with college scholarships, and success coaches.
4. The launch of the Semiconductor Technician Quick Start Program which trains participants with the skills they need to fast track employment with Intel and other semiconductors manufacturers. |
Funded through fees collected from businesses, especially the manufacturing sector, these programs are used to support industry needs by aligning resources with career pathways, higher education, and community college.
Most recently, the City of Hillsboro, and its partners Centro de Cultural and the Hillsboro School District, were awarded a $300,000 grant from Future Ready Oregon.
The grant will be used to build capacity, expand accessible training opportunities, create culturally and linguistically relevant career mapping, and launch a manufacturing advocacy campaign.
Creating employment pathways ensure our kids can create a future for themselves in their hometowns. These pathways also provide an opportunity to reskill existing workforce members. Empowering all working family members to attain higher wage jobs.
