In Hillsboro, and across the United States, advanced manufacturing plays a critical role in the economy and shaping the future. It uses cutting-edge science and innovative technologies and processes to improve design and production to create better products, and ultimately, a better world.
Companies in Washington County make items such as semiconductors, robotics, health care equipment, biotech medicines, solar panels, Hydro Flask lids, and airplane parts.
One in three jobs in Hillsboro is in advanced manufacturing, and these opportunities are predicted to grow 10% by 2027.
The national CHIPS Act aims to double the United State’s share of worldwide semiconductor manufacturing (an important segment of advanced manufacturing). To achieve this, nearly 237,000 workers will be needed, many of which will be with companies in the greater Hillsboro area.
This industry future is dependent on maintaining and growing a diverse and sustainable workforce.
Hillsboro is committed to investing in education and training programs including:
-
employer training reimbursement programs,
-
youth and adult apprenticeship programs, and
-
paid work-experiences.
These programs will help equip individuals with the skills necessary to meet demand and keep Oregon competitive.
As a regional leader in manufacturing workforce programming, Hillsboro convenes the Advanced Manufacturing Training and Education Collaborative of Hillsboro (AM-TECH) to create and drive a comprehensive workforce strategy for Hillsboro.
This October, we are calling on the community to join us in celebrating advancing manufacturing technology and practices, recognizing that such advancements are crucial to our economic prosperity, national security and global competitiveness.
